Remember these basic steps for understanding empathy and building a prototype:

  1. Make sure you understand your problem statement and how that relates to your customers needs – example: “How do we give customers the best mobile experience?”
  2. Speak with your customers – ask them why they do the things they do (behaviours), conduct interviews to find out what motivates them (fears and desires) and immerse yourself in their lives and communities (learn about why they make decisions).
  3. Create prototypes and Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to focus on the functionality, not the design – example: a black and white website wireframe for websites.
